The band are speaking from their homes, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in for their new album, I Quit.

"I follow the lists every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major milestone," adds Alana. "But we're just grateful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The record emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that odd transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The themes follow breakups and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them determining in real time who they aspire to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to actively work on ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That recent confidence required a different sonic direction – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The trio's honesty fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their personal horror stories.

Someone broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Legacy

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their place in the music world.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an worldwide fan base.

However Haim will always be their number one focus.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
