Loved ones of people buried in graves at risk from shoreline retreat state that indecision over how to address the issue is causing them unnecessary distress concerning the final resting places of their departed family.

A Looming Danger to Historic Graveyards

Local authorities have identified three church graveyards in the communities of Happisburgh, Trimingham, and Mundesley as being in danger of being engulfed by the ocean in the next few generations.

A recent report on the situation sets out a series of possible actions, from doing nothing to exhuming remains and relocating them in more secure sites. Authorities say it is for local people to determine how to proceed.

“Right now we’re in a state of uncertainty. It upsets me. They intended this to serve as their final resting place, but it isn’t going to be because of the sea.”

Projections indicate at least part of one graveyard could fall into the waves in the next 80 years, but some locals worry it will happen much sooner. “I think it’s got under 20 years, if you look at what’s occurred in the last 30 years,” one said.

Haunted by the Ghosts of Eccles

One resident remembered a childhood visit to the nearby village of Eccles, which has almost entirely vanished into the sea, including its place of worship and burial ground.

“It was possible to see people’s bones,” she said. “Some have this idealized notion that the deceased will just get washed out to sea. They won’t. Individuals will collect remains as souvenirs and go grave robbing looking for valuables. It’s completely disrespectful.”

“I fear that the same thing that befell at Eccles will happen at Happisburgh and there’ll be bones on the shore. I would feel disgusted by that.”

A Soldier's Grave in Peril

Along the shoreline lies the grave of a former paratrooper who died while serving abroad. His parent expressed she lost sleep after discovering her son’s final plot might one day be moved.

“It truly trouble me to think this won’t be his permanent resting place,” she said. “For us it’s an important place to go.”

In her view, new interments should cease but says it is too soon to disturb existing graves. “What I would choose for now is to take no action and watch carefully, but an early decision must be made when a tipping point has been attained.”

Searching for Solutions and Clarity

The lack of agreement over when and how to tackle the challenge has left bereaved families feeling exasperated and anxious.

Several families want more sea defences to slow the inevitable erosion and to permit funerals to proceed for now. Different voices argue the moment for relocation is approaching.

“It is very emotive,” said one relative. “The official study was thorough, but now there’s confusion about how it is implemented. And all parties is washing their hands over who is accountable.”

A coastal manager confirmed the graveyards were under the care of the local diocese. “Ultimately it is up to them to decide the direction to take. We are here to assist them through that process with communities.”

He added there was ample time to consider all the options. “This concerns many years before it starts to be lost.”

“Currently, there exists no unified opinion on what should happen yet. It requires productive local conversations to find the appropriate solutions for each village.”

The prospect of the loss of the churches and graveyards was described as one of “profound sorrow for the area,” but faith leaders also spoke of a belief in resurrection, providing a spiritual perspective on the temporal loss of hallowed earth.
